12th hole at Royal Birkdale

Royal Birkdale

Location

Royal Birkdale has been described as the best course to host ‘The Open’ championship and for many golfers it is the best links course in England and it is also ranked amongst the best courses in the world.

The Royal Birkdale club has hosted ‘The Open’ on eight occasions before and has been given the honour of hosting its ninth in 2008. Playing here is not for the faint-hearted, but it will reward you with an experience of a lifetime as you pit your wits against the constant sea winds and thread your ball between towering sand hills.

At 7,018 yards, this is a true links course, with well-positioned cavernous bunkers and slick undulating greens.  Your skills in taming the wind whipping off the Irish Sea and selecting the right club will be tested to the maximum as no two holes on this course are face in the same direction. There are many great holes on this course that will make your day special: the 183 yard 12th to a plateau green with massive bunkers guarding the green, the 198 yard 14th with five ominous bunkers awaiting your shot, but nothing prepares you for one of the hardest finishes in golf with three par fives in the last four holes. These holes sum up Birkdale beautifully as they are all birdie opportunities if your drive is straight but, trouble indeed if you are not.  If you are looking for a course to test your game to the full and provide an unforgettable golfing experience we can not recommend a finer destination.
